The Past Always Collects Its Debt
Davey says; “Anyone who knows your file…”
Then the line that changes the atmosphere; “What about Trevor?”
For a moment, Michael’s confidence disappears. He’s not worried about the heist. He’s worried about what the heist might uncover.
Rockstar reminds us of something that applies to all of us. You can leave the past behind… but you can’t stop the consequences from catching up. Ignoring yesterday doesn’t stop it arriving tomorrow.
“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” — William Faulkner
Notice the contrast between the television and the living room. On TV, the news celebrates the mystery of the robbery. The thieves are anonymous legends. Michael and Franklin have every reason to enjoy the moment.
Then Davey walks in. Instantly, the celebration ends. It’s a clever storytelling device. The audience sees two versions of the same event at once: To the public: it’s a sensational news story. To Michael: it’s the beginning of his worst nightmare.
Then Davey says; “What about Trevor”, and suddenly the heist isn’t the story anymore. The friendship, the betrayal and the lies from years ago become the real plot.
Our biggest victories can sometimes reopen the chapters we thought we’d already closed. That’s exactly what happens here. Michael believes the heist marks his return to the life he once loved. Instead, it becomes the trigger that forces him to confront everything he spent years trying to bury.
One final observation… I do go on!
Looking back over all the Michael scenes to date, I think there’s a consistent theme. At first, Michael’s story was about regret. Now I think it’s about consequences. Every major event in his life is the result of an earlier choice:
- He regrets the life crime gave him.
- He struggles to repair his family because of years of neglect.
- He returns to crime because of his impulsive destruction of Martin Madrazo’s house.
- He reunites with Lester because he needs help.
- And now, one successful heist resurrects Trevor and everything Michael thought he’d escaped.
Rockstar keeps returning to the same idea: You can change your future, but you can’t erase your past. I think that’s one of the defining themes of Michael’s entire character arc.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
