Sometimes Your Family Has Had Enough

This scene is actually much sadder than it first appears. Jimmy has reached the point where he believes his father is simply too much to deal with. Michael thinks he’s the victim of another betrayal but Jimmy genuinely believes he’s doing something necessary; “I’m protecting you from yourself”. That’s the important line.

Jimmy isn’t just abandoning Michael. He’s essentially saying; Dad, your behaviour has become so destructive that I need to remove myself from it… and then, because this is GTA V, he drugs him, steals money and disappears.

The hallucination that follows turns the whole thing into psychedelic nonsense; monkeys, aliens, falling through Los Santos — but underneath it is a very real family fracture.

The deeper analysis

What’s particularly interesting is that Jimmy’s behaviour is actually a distorted reflection of Michael’s own behaviour. Michael repeatedly believes; “I know what’s best for everyone.”

He tries to control Amanda.

He tries to control his children.

He tries to control Franklin.

He tries to control Trevor.

And when people don’t behave the way he wants, Michael reacts badly.

Now Jimmy does essentially the same thing to him. Jimmy decides; Dad is a problem. I’ll solve the problem myself. He doesn’t ask Michael. He doesn’t negotiate. He simply makes the decision for him. That’s very Michael.

That makes Jimmy’s accusation; “You’re too crazy, Dad”, surprisingly significant because Michael has spent much of the game dismissing everyone else’s concerns about his behaviour but here, the accusation comes from his son and Michael can’t really argue with the evidence.

The hallucination is doing more than providing comedy. The sequence of monkeys, aliens and falling through the city feels completely detached from the conversation but thematically, it’s actually quite appropriate. Michael’s entire world has become detached from reality.

His family is falling apart.

Trevor is back.

He’s working for the Feds.

He’s lying about his past.

He’s committing crimes again.

He’s being forced into fake deaths and government operations.

And now his son has drugged him and stolen his money.

Then Michael wakes up from the experience having effectively been dropped out of his own life. The literal fall through Los Santos works beautifully as a metaphor; Michael thinks he’s in control. He’s not. Jimmy’s final accusation is the important part:

“You’re too crazy, Dad.”

It’s funny because Jimmy is hardly the poster boy for sensible behaviour, but that’s precisely why it lands. Michael has become so dysfunctional that even Jimmy can recognise it and there’s a bigger tragedy underneath the joke. Michael desperately wants his family to love him, yet his behaviour keeps pushing them away.

Amanda leaves emotionally.

Tracey resents him.

Jimmy abandons him.

And Michael keeps blaming everyone else for the distance.

Until, occasionally, someone forces him to confront the possibility that he might actually be the problem. This scene doesn’t make Michael change but it does something almost as important; it shows us why he needs to.

Then GTA V throws a bunch of monkeys and aliens at him.

Perfect.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
