You Can’t Escape Where You Came From

Tanya immediately frames Franklin’s success as betrayal: “Where’s your love for the hood?”. That’s the pressure Franklin keeps facing throughout the game.

He’s trying to move forward, but the people he grew up with see that progress as abandonment. Franklin’s answer is revealing too. He doesn’t deny that he’s changed. He essentially says: If getting out means leaving the old habits behind, then guilty as charged.

But when Tanya tells him JB is in trouble, Franklin still helps. That’s the important distinction. Moving forward doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting where you came from. You can outgrow a place without turning your back on the people in it.

The deeper Franklin thread

This scene is actually another piece of the puzzle we’ve been building around Franklin. Look at the people pulling on him:

Lamar: “Remember where you came from.”

Stretch: “Come back into the old world.”

Tanya: “You owe the hood something.”

Michael: “Come into my world.”

Franklin is constantly being asked to belong to someone else’s version of his future and that’s why his character arc is so interesting. He’s not necessarily trying to become rich. He’s trying to become independent.

He wants to stop being somebody else’s employee, somebody else’s gang member, somebody else’s protégé. He wants his own life. Yet he still has enough loyalty and decency to help Tanya when she asks.

That’s a subtle but important distinction and Tanya’s opening insult is revealing. She initially calls Franklin out for going to Vinewood. She’s essentially saying: You’ve changed. Franklin’s response is basically: Yes. That’s the point.

That’s probably one of the clearest expressions of his character arc we’ve seen. He’s not ashamed of where he came from. He’s simply not convinced he has to stay there.

Growing up doesn’t mean forgetting where you came from. It means deciding where you’re going next and that makes Franklin a fascinating contrast to Stretch. Stretch returns from prison and immediately tries to drag Franklin backwards. Tanya needs Franklin’s help but still sees him through the lens of his old life.

Franklin is caught between loyalty to his past and ambition for his future and increasingly, he’s choosing the future.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
