Trust Is Easy to Lose

Franklin, Lamar and Stretch arrive expecting a deal. Then they realise they’ve been set up and Stretch immediately shoots the man they’re meeting.

The interesting part isn’t simply that Stretch kills him. It’s how quickly he decides what has happened. There’s no investigation. No attempt to understand the situation. No second chance. The moment Stretch believes they’ve been betrayed, he acts.

That’s dangerous because once trust disappears, every ambiguous situation can start looking like a threat. When you expect betrayal, you start finding it everywhere.

The deeper story point

This scene is another piece of Franklin’s dilemma. Franklin has been trying to move forward. Michael is pulling him into a completely different world. Lamar keeps dragging him back toward his old one and now Stretch has returned, representing another part of Franklin’s past.

The difference is that Franklin isn’t quite the same person anymore. That’s becoming increasingly important. Franklin can see the stupidity of some of what’s happening around him, but he’s still connected enough to the old world that he keeps getting dragged into it.

Stretch is particularly interesting because he represents what Franklin might have remained if he’d never started looking for something beyond gang life.

There’s also a nice irony in Stretch’s reaction He’s supposedly the experienced one. He’s the guy who’s just come out of prison. He’s the one who should understand how dangerous these situations are. Yet his response is essentially: Someone has betrayed us, eliminate them.

That’s not wisdom. That’s instinct and Franklin and Lamar are left dealing with the consequences.

Experience doesn’t automatically make us wiser. Sometimes it simply makes us faster at repeating the same mistakes and that’s where Stretch becomes particularly interesting. He’s returned from prison… but there’s very little evidence that he’s actually changed.

Which raises a much bigger question for Franklin: How do you move forward when the people around you keep pulling you back into the person you used to be?

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
