One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI 📅 89 Days to launch
Leadership Isn’t Always Polite
Trevor welcomes his potential employers; “These are our guests all right”. Then the chef tells him they’re about to be attacked.
Trevor doesn’t panic. He doesn’t abandon them. He calmly puts them somewhere he believes will keep them safe; “Ample room inside.”
The fact that he’s essentially locking two businessmen in an industrial freezer makes this hilariously Trevor, but there’s a genuine leadership lesson underneath it.
When things go wrong, people look to whoever appears to be in control. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. Sometimes it’s simply about remaining calm enough for everyone else to believe there is a plan.
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” — John C. Maxwell
The deeper Trevor angle
This scene adds another piece to the picture we’ve been building. Trevor is chaotic. Trevor is violent. Trevor is impulsive… but when business is threatened, something changes.
He becomes focused. He immediately understands the priorities:
Protect the potential customers.
Protect the product.
Deal with the attackers.
Continue the business.
That’s actually quite impressive. He doesn’t tell Cheng to run. He doesn’t abandon the operation. He doesn’t panic. He simply makes a decision and gets on with it and there’s a wonderful contrast with Michael again.
Michael is often overwhelmed by the emotional consequences of his decisions. Trevor is remarkably good at functioning in chaos.
Put Trevor in a peaceful family environment and he’s a disaster. Put him in the middle of an armed attack on a meth factory… and suddenly he’s the most organised man in the room.
That’s a fascinating character trait and I think the final line makes the whole thing. Trevor calmly tells Cheng; “Tour will recommence shortly, gentlemen”. As though he’s simply had to pause the guided tour because the fire alarm went off. That’s the comedy but underneath it is a genuine insight into Trevor; Some people are built for calm. Others discover their strengths when everything falls apart.
Trevor is very clearly the second type and that may explain why he keeps surviving situations that should have destroyed him.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.
