The Pain Behind the Anger

Trevor looks over Los Santos and says; “I grieved for you. You weren’t even fucking dead”. That changes everything we’ve seen so far.

Trevor’s anger isn’t simply about being lied to. He genuinely mourned Michael. For nearly ten years, Trevor believed his best friend was dead.

He didn’t just lose a business partner. He lost someone he considered family and now he discovers Michael was alive the entire time. The anger is enormous because the grief was real.

“Anger is often grief that has nowhere else to go.”

And this is where I think Trevor becomes a much more interesting character. We’ve watched him for quite a while now. We’ve seen; violence, drug dealing, intimidation, revenge, cruelty, absurd humour and business ambition

It’s very easy to conclude that Trevor doesn’t care about anyone but this scene destroys that interpretation. He cared about Michael deeply. That’s why the betrayal is so devastating.

Trevor doesn’t say; “I missed you”. He says”I grieved for you”. That’s a very different word. Grief means he believed he had permanently lost someone. He went through the emotional process of accepting Michael’s death. Only to discover that the death was a lie.

Trevor has spent the entire journey to Los Santos talking about finding Michael as though he’s going to kill him, but when he finally reaches the city, what comes out isn’t; “I’m going to kill that bastard”. It’s; “You were my best friend”. That’s the truth underneath the anger.

And the final line is perfect Trevor; “Guess who’s coming to shit on your doorstep”. He can’t simply say; “I’m hurt and I want to talk to you”. He’s Trevor. So even his declaration of emotional devastation has to end as a threat. That’s the tragedy of the character. He feels enormous emotions but has almost no healthy way of expressing them.

Michael suppresses his pain. Trevor weaponises his. Now they’re about to meet again. For the first time, we don’t just see what Trevor does. We understand why Michael’s betrayal matters so much to him and that makes everything that’s about to happen between them considerably more complicated than a simple revenge story.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
