Why Do We Care So Much About Other People’s Lives?
Beverly says; “The guy’s a fraud”. Franklin replies; “Why do you care, man?”
That one question changes everything. Beverly has no real answer. He talks about celebrities, hypocrisy, but underneath it all… he’s emotionally invested in someone he’ll probably never meet.
Rockstar quietly asks a question that’s even more relevant today than it was in 2013. Why do we spend so much energy worrying about strangers’ lives? Comparison and obsession steal time you’ll never get back.
This conversation feels even more relevant today than when GTA V launched. Beverly isn’t really interested in truth. He’s interested in exposure. He wants to catch celebrities being inconsistent because inconsistency sells. Franklin, meanwhile, represents the audience member saying; “Why does any of this matter?”.
That’s the clash. One man profits from other people’s private lives. The other can’t understand why anyone would care; “Why do you care, man?” It’s such a simple question, yet it dismantles Beverly’s entire worldview. The more time we spend living through other people’s lives, the less time we spend improving our own.
I think that’s the hidden lesson Rockstar tucked into this exchange. Beverly believes he’s exposing celebrity hypocrisy, but in doing so, he accidentally exposes something about himself; he’s become so consumed by other people’s lives that he’s forgotten to live his own.
Unlike the Michael scenes, which are about regret and family, Beverly’s dialogue is almost entirely about human behaviour; gossip, outrage, assumptions, image and attention. Those are timeless subjects and thought-provoking, as we recognise those behaviours in ourselves, and in today’s culture.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
