Some Words Never Really Leave You

Trevor is barely paying attention to the television. Then he hears; “You forget thousands of things every day. Make sure this is one of them”. He freezes. That sentence belongs to Michael.

Trevor doesn’t need to see him. He doesn’t need anyone to explain it. He knows and suddenly everything we’ve learned about Michael’s past becomes much more significant. Trevor thought Michael was dead. Now he knows he isn’t.

Sometimes one familiar voice… one phrase… one memory… can completely change your world.

“The past is never where you think you left it.” Katherine Anne Porter

This is a beautiful piece of narrative symmetry. Earlier, Michael used that line casually during a confrontation; “You forget thousands of things every day. Make sure this is one of them”. Now Trevor hears it on television years later.

To the reporter, it’s just a quote from an old news story. To Trevor, it’s a fingerprint. It’s proof. That means Michael’s attempt to bury his old life has failed without him even knowing it.

That’s brilliant because the player has known Michael’s secret for quite some time. Trevor hasn’t. So for the first time, we’re suddenly watching Michael’s story from Trevor’s perspective.

And then there’s the timing.

Trevor is introduced in the most chaotic, morally outrageous circumstances imaginable. He’s immediately presented as unpredictable and dangerous. But the moment he hears Michael’s voice, the comedy disappears.

He stops. He listens. He remembers.

That tells us something incredibly important about Trevor before he has even properly met the player; Michael matters to him. Not just as an old associate. Not just as a potential enemy.

Something much deeper is going on.

What tells you more about a person? The way they behave today, or the person they become when confronted with their past? Trevor’s reaction is the first tiny glimpse that there’s much more to him than the psychopath Rockstar initially appears to be presenting.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
