The Cheapest Choice Can Become the Most Expensive

The assistant asks; “Tell me about her. What’s her taste?” Michael replies; “Cheap, thank God! This ain’t my wife we’re talking about.”

It’s a throwaway joke but underneath it is a familiar human contradiction. People often try to spend as little as possible on relationships they don’t value… while believing money can somehow repair the relationships that matter most.

Michael has a mansion, luxury cars, plenty of expensive possessions, yet the relationship with his wife is falling apart. Rockstar reminds us that some of life’s most valuable things can’t be fixed or measured by what we spend.

This joke only works because we already know Michael’s life. Earlier in the story we’ve watched him discover Amanda’s affair, argue with his children, question his purpose and admit to his therapist that, despite having money, he’s miserable.

Now, when he jokes about buying something “cheap” because it isn’t for his wife, it’s funny on the surface, but it’s also self-deprecating. Michael isn’t mocking Amanda as much as he’s acknowledging that his marriage has become so damaged that even an ordinary shopping conversation reminds him of it.

That’s what Rockstar does so well. They take a one-line gag and let it carry the weight of everything that’s happened before.

The funniest jokes are sometimes the ones that reveal the deepest truths about the person telling them. That’s why this scene stands out. It isn’t just comic relief, it’s another glimpse into a man who uses humour to cope with a life that isn’t nearly as successful as it looks from the outside. That one rings a bell for sure…

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
