Not Everything the Public Wants… the Public Needs
Beverly says; “The public needs to know. The fans deserve answers”. Franklin replies; “Not if the question is… who’s sleeping with who”. That’s the heart of the scene.
Beverly hides behind noble language like; “The truth”. Franklin exposes what he’s really selling; curiosity, gossip and intrusion.
Rockstar reminds us that just because people are interested in something… it doesn’t mean they’re entitled to it.
There’s a difference between public interest… and what interests the public.
“Not everything that can be known needs to be known.”
This conversation feels almost prophetic. Beverly keeps talking about “the truth,” but what he really means is attention. He dresses gossip up as journalism because it sounds more important.
Franklin cuts through all of that with common sense. He isn’t defending celebrities; he’s questioning why intimate details about strangers have become entertainment in the first place.
That’s a distinction that feels even more relevant today. We live in a world where private moments can become public within minutes, and where “people want to know” is often used to justify sharing almost anything.
The truth informs us. Gossip entertains us. Knowing the difference is a sign of wisdom.
I think that’s exactly what Rockstar was getting at. Beverly believes he’s uncovering truth, but Franklin recognises that there’s a world of difference between exposing wrongdoing and exploiting someone’s private life for clicks, money or curiosity. That’s a timeless observation about human nature, wrapped up in one of GTA V’s funniest side characters.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
