Some consequences can’t be imagined
Michael presses the button. He’s expecting a clean hit. Instead…
“Oh Jesus… Whoa. Whoa.”
There isn’t any celebration. No witty one-liner. Just shock.
Rockstar is reminding us of something very human. It’s easy to imagine making a decision. It’s much harder to imagine how you’ll feel once it’s irreversible. Sometimes the reality of our actions is far bigger than the version we created in our minds.
“Every action has consequences, but not every consequence can be predicted.”
This is one of the few moments where Michael’s mask slips completely. Throughout the game he’s sarcastic, confident and often emotionally detached. Here, for just a second, there’s no performance. His instinctive reaction; “Oh Jesus… Whoa.”, sounds like someone witnessing a tragedy, not someone celebrating a successful hit.
What’s interesting is that Rockstar doesn’t have him apologise or suddenly become remorseful. Instead, they show something more believable: surprise. Michael knew what he intended to do, but he hadn’t truly pictured what it would look like when it happened.
That feels psychologically authentic. People often understand an action in the abstract, yet react very differently when confronted with its reality.
It’s easy to live with a decision in your imagination. The real test begins when you have to live with its reality. That’s the hidden lesson in this scene. It isn’t simply about violence, it’s about the gap between what we think we’re choosing and what we actually experience once the choice has been made.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
