One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI ๐ 86 Days to launch
Obsession Doesn’t Listen to Reason
Wayne eventually gives Trevor the information; “I did find a Michael DeSanta…”. Then; “What’s his wife’s name?”
“Amanda”. Trevor’s reaction is immediate; “You’re a genius, you moron”.
The search is over. He has found Michael but notice something important. Wayne had already given Trevor enough information to prove he’d been searching. Trevor wasn’t interested in whether Wayne had tried. He wanted the answer. That’s the difference between concern and obsession.
When we’re obsessed with an outcome, evidence of effort can become irrelevant. We only care whether we’ve got what we want.
“The first step toward wisdom is learning to listen.”
The deeper story here is fantastic. This is where Trevor finally gets confirmation; Michael Townley is Michael De Santa and suddenly, everything Trevor has been feeling since hearing that television report has somewhere to go.
There’s also a fascinating contrast with Michael. Michael has spent years creating a new identity. He changed his name. Built a family. Bought the house. Tried to become someone else. Trevor doesn’t care. He sees straight through the new identity. To Trevor, Michael will always be Michael Townley. That’s why this scene is so important.
Michael has spent years trying to bury the past. Trevor has spent years apparently waiting for it to return and now he’s found it.
Trevor doesn’t care that Wayne was genuinely trying. He’s so fixated on Michael that anything short of the exact answer is treated as failure and then Wayne finally says; “Michael DeSanta”. Trevor immediately recognises the significance.
That reaction tells us how much this has been consuming him. Sometimes obsession isn’t about wanting something. It’s about being unable to accept not knowing. Trevor couldn’t accept that Michael was dead. He couldn’t accept that he didn’t know where Michael was and now that uncertainty is gone.
He’s got a name. A wife. A location and a target. Trevor Phillips has finally found Michael. From this point forward, the two stories are no longer running parallel. They’re on a collision course.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.

When you’re desperate for an answer, do you want the truth… or just the answer you were hoping for?
