Boundaries Only Work If They’re Respected

Wade’s cousin makes his position very clear; “You gotta go. Both of you.”

Trevor’s response? He ignores it. Then; “Now would you get me a fucking drink.”

The cousin says he doesn’t have any. Trevor immediately gives him another task. It’s funny because Trevor has absolutely no concept of personal boundaries.

But there’s a broader lesson underneath it: A boundary isn’t something you announce. It’s something you enforce. The cousin keeps explaining why Trevor can’t stay. Trevor simply keeps treating the explanation as a negotiation.

“Your boundaries are only meaningful when you’re willing to defend them.”

The deeper Trevor connection

This scene also tells us something about why Trevor and Wade work so well together. Wade doesn’t really challenge Trevor. He follows. Trevor gives him instructions and Wade generally does them.

The cousin is different. He actually says no and Trevor immediately starts pushing against it. That’s another recurring characteristic of Trevor we’ve seen throughout these clips; He needs control.

With the Lost, he takes their territory. With the Chinese gang, he demands their business. With Ron, he dictates the operation. With Wayne, he demands information. With Wade, he controls the journey. Now he’s entered someone’s home and immediately tries to control that environment too. It’s almost as though Trevor can’t simply occupy a space. He has to own it.

Trevor demands loyalty from other people while routinely ignoring their boundaries. That’s a really important contradiction in his character. He wants people to respect his relationships and his territory… but has very little respect for theirs.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
