Good Intentions Aren’t Always Good Enough
Michael saves Tracey. Objectively, that’s what he set out to do. Yet the final thing she says is; “You ruined my life”. It’s an emotional exaggeration, of course but it’s exactly how she feels in that moment.
Rockstar reminds us of something that’s true in families, friendships and workplaces; You can have the best intentions in the world… and still leave someone feeling hurt. Intentions matter but so does impact.

This scene reveals one of the biggest traps in family life; Every person is reacting to a different version of the same event. Jimmy thinks; “I was just trying to help”. Michael thinks; “I just saved my daughter”. Tracey thinks; “Nobody trusts me”.
None of those feelings are fake. They’re simply different. That’s why the conversation goes nowhere. Nobody is arguing about the facts anymore, they’re arguing from emotion.
I think that’s incredibly authentic. Families often aren’t divided because they remember events differently. They’re divided because they experienced those events differently. You don’t have to be wrong for someone else to feel hurt. Understanding that difference is where real communication begins…
This is another piece of mature writing by Rockstar. They resist the temptation to declare a winner. Instead, they leave us with three people who all believe they’re justified, and that’s often exactly what real family conflict looks like…
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
