Sometimes Anger Is a Cry for Attention
Michael loses his temper and smashes the TV. Jimmy doesn’t cry about the TV. The television isn’t the issue. The games aren’t the issue. Jimmy isn’t asking for a new TV⌠he’s asking for a father.
Rockstar flips the stereotype on its head. Michael thinks Jimmy needs discipline. Jimmy thinks Michael needs to be present. Both are angry. Both are hurting. Neither knows how to say it.

Preciously Michael blamed Jimmy’s gaming. I said then: “Michael blames the games while missing the actual problem”. This scene proves it.
Jimmy isn’t really complaining about the TV. He’s confronting years of emotional distance. Michael hears disrespect. Jimmy is expressing disappointment. That’s why this scene hits so hard. Both characters are talking about different problems while believing they’re having the same argument.
The loudest arguments are rarely about what people are shouting about. They’re often about needs that have gone unheard for years.
Perhaps one of the deepest pieces of writing in GTA V. Rockstar disguised a family tragedy as a row over a television, and that’s exactly why the scene still resonates so many years later.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
