Sometimes the Biggest Battle Is Letting Go of the Past
The therapist asks; “What about the people you kill?”. Michael turns it into a joke. Then says; “I’m just a fat washed-up jock who can’t get his head around the fact that his high school football career didn’t play out the way that he planned.”
That’s the real confession. He’s not talking about football. He’s talking about identity. Michael still measures himself against the man he thought he’d become decades earlier.
Rockstar is pointing out something incredibly human. Many people don’t struggle because of who they are today… They struggle because they can’t let go of who they expected to be.

This conversation completes a picture that’s been building throughout Michael’s story. We’ve already explored:
The Cost of Success.
Feeling directionless.
Searching for purpose.
Regretting his choices.
Now we discover something even deeper. Michael isn’t only mourning the life he lived. He’s mourning the life he never got to live.
That makes this line about being a “washed-up jock” much more powerful than it first appears. It’s not literally about American football. It’s about the version of yourself you imagined when you were younger, the career you thought you’d have, the person you thought you’d become, the life you assumed was waiting for you.
Almost everyone has a version of that story. Peace doesn’t come from becoming the person you once imagined. It comes from accepting, and making the most of, the person you’ve become.
That’s a timeless lesson, and I think it’s exactly the kind of hidden human truth Rockstar quietly tucked inside what first sounds like just another sarcastic exchange.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
