Good Friends Tell the Truth
Michael makes an apology; “I haven’t been a good friend to you, Lester”. He knows he’s been absent. Lester doesn’t ask for an apology. He doesn’t guilt-trip him. Instead, he immediately moves the conversation forward; “You need my help… because you came here”.
Lester understands something important. Real friendships aren’t about keeping score. They’re about being honest when you’ve fallen short and choosing to help each other anyway.
Friendship doesn’t require perfection. It requires honesty.
“A true friend tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.”
This scene introduces one of the healthiest relationships in the game. Unlike Michael and Amanda, Michael and Jimmy or Michael and Trevor. Michael and Lester don’t pretend to be something they’re not. Michael admits he hasn’t been a good friend. Lester doesn’t waste time punishing him for it. He simply acknowledges reality and asks, “So how do we move forward?”
That’s surprisingly mature writing. Neither man is perfect, but both understand that relationships survive not because people never disappoint each other, but because they’re willing to be honest when they do.
The strongest friendships aren’t the ones that never break. They’re the ones where both people are willing to rebuild instead of keeping score.
I think that’s the real lesson hidden in this reunion. It isn’t really about planning a heist, it’s about two flawed people choosing cooperation over resentment, and that’s a far more universal story than it first appears.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.
