SEGA apparently looked at the 1990s and decided what the world really needed was a blue hedgehog who runs incredibly fast, collects golden rings and spends an alarming amount of his spare time being chased by a bloke in a flying egg. It worked!
Sonic made his Japanese debut on 26 July 1991 and rapidly became SEGA’s mascot and one of gaming’s most recognisable characters. SEGA describes the original as the beginning of Sonic’s story, built around speed, varied stage gimmicks and the character’s distinctive appeal. Sonic turned “gotta go fast” into a perfectly respectable gaming philosophy.
