SAMUS ARAN _ Metroid _ Gaming Character Archive #013

SAMUS ARAN _ Metroid _ Gaming Character Archive #013

She lands on an alien planet.

Nobody knows she’s there.

Nobody knows quite what she’s capable of.

And somewhere inside the planet is a collection of things that really, really don’t want her finding them.

Then Samus starts finding them.

  1. One bounty hunter. One enormous alien maze. Several very bad days for the Space Pirates.

Samus brought exploration, isolation, upgrades and a surprisingly tough bounty hunter to the Famicom Disk System/NES era. Metroid debuted in Japan on 6 August 1986, with Samus sent to Zebes to stop the Space Pirates and destroy their fortress and Mother Brain.

Samus Aran wasn’t just another character in armour. She helped establish an entirely different kind of gaming adventure — explore, get lost, find an upgrade, realise you can now reach somewhere you couldn’t before, and immediately go back to see what’s behind that suspicious-looking wall.
