Sometimes Leaving Is the Only Way to Be Heard _ GTA Analysis Beyond The Mission

One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI 📅 62 Days to launch

Sometimes Leaving Is the Only Way to Be Heard

This is a surprisingly serious moment in Michael’s story. Amanda isn’t simply saying “I’m angry with you”. She’s saying: I’ve lost confidence that you’re going to change.

That’s important because Michael has spent much of the game promising change while repeatedly returning to exactly the behaviour that caused the problems in the first place.

Amanda lists the evidence:

Michael’s increasingly erratic behaviour
his relationship with Trevor
the incident involving Fabian
the drugs in the car
the promises to change

And then comes the most significant sentence:

“You promised me you’d change and you haven’t changed a bit.”

That’s the real accusation. Not “you’ve become worse.”

“You’re exactly the same.”

The Fabian question

I think this is where the scene gets particularly interesting. It’s very easy to interpret Amanda as:

“Fabian is available, Michael is difficult, therefore I’ll leave Michael and have some fun with Fabian until Michael calms down.”

And there is certainly evidence in the game that Amanda is attracted to Fabian and that their relationship isn’t entirely innocent but there’s an important distinction; Fabian may be the catalyst. He isn’t necessarily the cause.

Amanda’s letter gives us several reasons for leaving, and Fabian is only one part of a much larger collapse. Michael has:

repeatedly broken promises
returned to criminal activity
brought Trevor back into their lives
become increasingly volatile
behaved irresponsibly around his children
attacked Fabian
apparently endangered Jimmy

So even if Amanda knows the Fabian relationship is temporary, that doesn’t mean the separation itself is fake. She may genuinely believe:

“I need to get away from Michael before this gets even worse.”

There’s something else worth considering. Amanda has spent years being unhappy with Michael. Fabian represents something completely different from Michael. He’s calm. He’s attentive. He’s physically expressive. He talks about spirituality and emotional balance. Michael is almost the polar opposite.

Fabian doesn’t necessarily have to be the love of her life to become attractive to Amanda. He represents an escape from the chaos and that makes their relationship more believable.

The most revealing line may actually be the last one; “Please don’t try to contact us and try not to get yourself killed”. That’s a strange combination. The first half is a boundary; Leave us alone. The second half is concern; I still don’t want you dead.

Amanda hasn’t stopped caring. She’s stopped believing that being with Michael is good for her. That’s a much more nuanced situation and it fits the larger Michael story perfectly.

There’s also a brutal irony here. Michael spent years creating a fake life because he thought it would give him security and happiness. Now; Trevor has returned. Davey controls his freedom. The Feds are using him. Franklin is increasingly involved. Jimmy has left. Amanda has left. Tracey has left and Michael is back where he started: alone.

The difference is that this time he can’t blame the criminal life for destroying his family because he tried the respectable life. He got the house. He got the money. He got the family and he still managed to destroy it.

That’s why this letter matters so much. Michael’s biggest problem was never simply that his old life came back. It was that he brought Michael De Santa with him. Amanda’s final message is effectively the first time someone close to him says; The problem isn’t the life. It’s you.

That’s a pretty brutal thing for Michael to have to hear.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.

In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.
