One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI ๐ 70 Days to launch
The Past Doesn’t Stay Buried
This scene is really the moment when Michael’s carefully constructed life finally becomes impossible to maintain. Davey knows about the jewellery store robbery. Trevor knows Michael is alive and suddenly the two men who helped Michael escape his old life are both standing on opposite sides of him.
The conversation also reveals something fascinating about Michael and Davey. Their relationship has never been friendship in the conventional sense. It’s mutually beneficial survival. Davey protected Michael’s new identity, while Michael gave Davey the career and results he wanted but now that Trevor has returned, their interests become completely intertwined.
Then comes the brilliantly dark punchline: Davey needs Michael to infiltrate the coroner’s office by playing dead. Which, given Michael’s history, is almost comically appropriate. Then Davey knocks him unconscious and actually does it. That’s the moment where the relationship shifts again. Davey isn’t asking Michael to help him anymore. He’s taking control of Michael.
The deeper connection
There’s an even bigger theme running through these recent scenes.
Michael has spent years trying to control the story of his own life. He tells himself he’s retired. He tells Trevor he’s dead. He tells his family he’s changed. He tells himself that the jewellery job is simply one last return to the old life. But every time he tries to put the past into a box, somebody opens it.
Trevor literally walks back into his house. Davey calls him to the observatory. The jewellery robbery threatens his legal immunity and now Davey is forcing him to become part of another deception.
There’s also a subtle difference between Michael and Davey. Michael wants to escape his past. Davey wants to protect his position. Neither is particularly interested in morality. They’re interested in survival. That’s why their relationship works so well. They understand each other because they’re both compromised and Davey’s final act is almost the perfect representation of their entire relationship:
Michael thinks they’re going to have a conversation. Davey decides what happens next. Bonk. Lights out and suddenly Michael is officially dead again. Which makes the whole thing wonderfully GTA: Michael’s solution to being discovered alive is to become dead… again.
This also sets up the next stage beautifully. Davey isn’t simply dragging Michael into another mission โ he’s using Michael to fight his own institutional war, while Michael is simultaneously dealing with the much more personal threat of Trevor.
So the pressure on Michael is now coming from both sides:
Trevor wants his friend back.
Davey wants his asset protected.
Michael wants his old life back.
And those three things are becoming increasingly impossible to reconcile.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.
