Not Everything Needs to Be Seen _ GTA Analysis Beyond The Mission

One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI 📅 75 Days to launch

We Don’t Need to See Everything

Beverly wants the photograph. Poppy wants publicity. Her boyfriend thinks they’re having a genuine romantic moment.

Beverly is convinced the public needs to know. But does it? There’s a difference between wanting to see something and having a reason to see it. Just because we’re curious doesn’t mean we’re entitled to someone’s private life.

The really interesting Beverly angle

We’ve watched him repeatedly justify his behaviour by saying: “The public deserves to know.”, but look at what’s actually happening. He’s not exposing corruption. He’s not uncovering a crime. He’s not protecting anyone. He’s trying to sell someone else’s private moment because he thinks people will pay to see it.

There’s a difference between journalism and voyeurism. Beverly has convinced himself they’re the same thing and Franklin is once again standing beside him thinking: “How the hell did I get involved in this?”

There’s another wonderfully ridiculous layer: Poppy’s entire relationship appears to have been constructed around publicity. The “teen couple” image is apparently marketing. She’s worried about how the relationship will affect her career. Her boyfriend thinks they’re in love. Beverly wants photographs.

Everyone is performing for an audience. Even when there supposedly isn’t one and then, ironically, the boyfriend discovers that there is someone watching.

The whole thing collapses. That’s classic GTA V satire.

When everything becomes content, the hardest thing to find might be a moment that actually belongs to you…

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.

In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.
