The Business of Celebrity Scandal _ GTA Analysis Beyond The Mission

One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI 📅 109 Days to launch

When Curiosity Becomes an Industry

Beverly isn’t really interested in journalism. He’s interested in selling curiosity. The celebrity’s private life is simply the product and his enthusiasm is almost entirely about the money: “We’re in the money”. That’s the interesting bit.

Once someone’s private life becomes commercially valuable, there’s suddenly an incentive to dig deeper, photograph more and cross boundaries. The question stops being: “Should people know this?”, and becomes: “Will people pay to see it?”.

That’s a surprisingly relevant observation about modern celebrity culture. If there’s money in curiosity, someone will always be willing to sell it.

The bigger Beverly pattern

We’ve now got enough Beverly clips to see what Rockstar is doing with him. He’s supposedly a photographer but he’s not really interested in photography. He’s interested in access.

He’s interested in finding the moment that someone doesn’t want photographed and then selling it. That’s why his language is so revealing.

He’s constantly talking about: the shot → the story → the money. The person in the photograph almost becomes irrelevant. Franklin, meanwhile, keeps looking at him as though he’s thinking: “Mate… seriously?”

That’s actually why Franklin works so well in these scenes. He doesn’t share Beverly’s obsession. He’s participating because there’s money involved, but he still retains enough perspective to recognise that Beverly is a complete oddball.

When someone’s embarrassment becomes someone else’s business opportunity, privacy has already lost.

With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.

In this new collection I’m analysing the story in the comments to tell you what I think is going on. Disagree with what I say? Get in there! My challenge is to get the whole game covered by GTAVI launch.
