Confidence Doesn’t Make Something True
Trevor announces; “The Lost MC are out of business”. He says it as though the matter has already been decided.
The gang leader immediately challenges him; “Saying something don’t make it true”
That’s a surprisingly profound little exchange. There’s a huge difference between confidence and reality. You can announce your success. You can believe in yourself. You can tell everyone what you’re going to achieve. But eventually… reality gets the final vote.

There’s something really interesting happening with Trevor’s character. Trevor doesn’t seem to cope well with uncertainty. Michael’s reappearance creates uncertainty. Johnny challenges him. The Lost MC challenge his authority and Trevor responds to all of it in essentially the same way; He tries to seize control.
If he can make himself the most frightening person in the room, then nobody else gets to decide what happens. That’s why this line is so revealing; “The guns and crack in this area go through Trevor Phillips’ enterprise, or they ain’t going”. He’s not really describing a business plan. He’s establishing a world where Trevor makes the rules.
The response cuts right through the fantasy; “Saying something don’t make it true”. That’s almost a warning to Trevor himself. Trevor can destroy the caravan. He can intimidate people. He can announce that he’s in charge, but none of that guarantees the future he’s imagining.
And there’s a lovely irony here. Trevor calls it “Trevor Phillips’ enterprise”. He’s trying to turn chaos into a business. He’s trying to turn violence into legitimacy. He’s essentially saying; “I’m not a criminal. I’m an entrepreneur.”!
Which is exactly the sort of ridiculous self-justification that makes Trevor so entertaining.
You can call yourself the boss. You can act like the boss. But eventually, everyone else has to believe it too. It’s really a scene about power, perception and the difference between declaring authority and actually possessing it. Beware of those false gods and bosses eh!?
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for one last ride through the narrative.
