The World Doesn’t Stop Changing
The shop assistant says; “Lost your job… got too old… got outsourced”. Michael replies; “I didn’t lose my job”. Then comes the line that matters; “Now you gotta fit in with a different generation”.
The assistant isn’t trying to be cruel. She’s describing a reality. Every generation reaches a point where the world starts speaking a language it didn’t grow up with. New technology. New trends. New expectations. The choice isn’t whether change happens. It’s whether we’re willing to adapt.

What’s clever about this exchange is that both characters have a blind spot. The assistant assumes Michael is just another older man who can’t keep up with modern life. Michael, meanwhile, is defensive because he hears the comments as a personal attack rather than recognising the broader truth behind them.
Neither one is completely wrong. The world does move on. Industries change, technology changes, culture changes. At the same time, experience still has value, even if it doesn’t always look fashionable.
Rockstar isn’t really taking sides. They’re highlighting the tension between experience and change, a tension every generation eventually faces. The irony is that today’s confident young shop assistant will one day find himself in Michael’s position, being told by someone even younger that the world has moved on again.
Every generation thinks it’s teaching the next one how the world works. Eventually, every generation discovers the world has changed again. That’s a lesson that stays relevant no matter when you play GTA V, which is why this throwaway conversation has aged surprisingly well.
With Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, I thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the greatest games ever made. Over the days leading up to the launch of GTA VI, I’m returning to Los Santos for “Grand Theft Auto V – Series 2”.

What’s the biggest change you’ve had to adapt to as you’ve got older? For Gramepa I think it’s the loss of physical strength… but there is quite a list!
