Are You Hearing… or Assuming? _ GTA Analysis Beyond The Mission
One Last Ride On The Road To GTA VI 📅 112 Days to launch
We Hear What We Expect to Hear
Michael makes an awkward joke; “This exercise stuff’s about as relaxing for you as it is for my wife.”. The jogger immediately explodes; “I don’t want to sleep with you…” Michael never suggested that! She’s responding to an assumption, not to his words.
Rockstar is highlighting something we all do from time to time. We don’t always hear what’s said. We hear it through the filter of our own experiences, insecurities and expectations. Sometimes the conversation in our head is louder than the one happening in front of us.
“We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.” — Anaïs Nin
This is one of those wonderfully observational scenes that doesn’t advance the plot at all, yet says something true about people.
Neither Michael nor the jogger is really having a conversation. They’re both carrying their own emotional baggage into a chance encounter. Michael is already frustrated with his collapsing marriage, and the jogger is clearly carrying her own frustrations. The result is two people talking past each other rather than to each other.
That’s why the exchange feels so authentic. We’ve all had conversations where someone reacts to what they thought we meant instead of what we actually said. Most misunderstandings don’t happen because people aren’t listening. They happen because people are listening through the lens of their own experiences.
That’s a timeless piece of human psychology hidden inside a 20-second joke, and exactly the kind of subtle Rockstar writing we all appreciate.

Have you ever realised someone was arguing with a version of you that only existed in their head?
