My journey through gaming began when I was about ten years old.
We had family friends called John and Julie. Every month or so we’d go and visit them, and if I was really lucky, I’d be allowed to play on his Intellivision (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellivision).
Those visits became the highlight of my month.
Trips to the zoo, the beach or anywhere else held very little appeal. All I wanted to know was, *”When are we going to John’s?”*
I’d ask over and over again.
The answer was usually, *”Soon,”* or *”Stop asking.”*
Nobody understood why it mattered so much.
But something had already happened.
Without realising it, I’d discovered something that completely captured my imagination. Those simple games of Pong—and the ability to control and interact with what was happening on that glowing television screen—had flicked a switch that has never really been turned off.
I wasn’t just consuming entertainment anymore.
I was part of it.
Looking back now, I realise that’s where it all started.
The excitement.
The anticipation.
The feeling that one game was never quite enough.
That’s when I first spoke that little request that gamers make to this day all over the world:
“Just one more game.”
Next stop: Space Invaders took my lunch money before 8 a.m. and left me hungry.
