Level Up Lessons #001 – RPGs Taught Me Patience
Role-playing games never rewarded impatience.
You couldn’t rush becoming the hero. You started with rusty gear, questionable fashion choices and the ability to lose a fight against something only slightly more dangerous than an angry chicken.
Progress came one quest at a time.
Back then I probably wished for faster levelling, bigger rewards and shorter journeys. Looking back now, I realise the journey was the reward. Every level felt earned because it took time. It reminds me of the lessons Mr Miyagi taught in The Karate Kid: mastery comes from patient repetition, not shortcuts.
That’s a lesson I’ve carried into real life.
Whether it’s learning video editing, growing a YouTube channel, fixing something around the house or simply getting better at a hobby, meaningful progress usually arrives far more slowly than we’d like. More often than not, it’s the people who keep showing up, with patience, resilience and a bit of stubborn determination, who eventually succeed.
Games quietly taught me that patience isn’t about waiting. It’s about continuing when the exciting part hasn’t happened yet.
Maybe that’s why I still love RPGs after all these years.
Some lessons stay with you long after you’ve logged out.
